This week on the show, have memes become too mainstream? MEMESTREAM?!?!

And we got a question about what kind of music we're into these days, so we took it as an opportunity to talk about All the Bands We've Loved Before.

UPDATE: Jade the cat was found! :)

Hey Josh and Kevin, I really liked this week's episode and I wanted to add to what you said about people rallying around a band and analyzing and decoding their music.

I know you guys mentioned Twenty Øne Pilots, and I think they are a really good example of this.(Specifically, their latest release "Trench") In short, Trench continues Tyler's battle with Blurryface that began in the previous album. (Blurryface being a representation of Tyler's insecurities and depressive thoughts, and the character Tyler plays on stage whenever he paints his hands and neck black)

What really started the major intrigue in the story of Trench was back In early 2017 (during the band's year-long "hiatus") when a fan noticed a web address at the end of a promotional video on their website that hadn't been there before. This then lead the fanbase to a cryptic website with written letters from a previously unknown character named Clancy trying to escape from a city named Dema and it's nine rulers. (the rulers have since been confirmed to be blurryface)

Overtime, more and more of these letters started being posted and a story started to develop. (here's the link if you want to see just how cryptic the band got, http://dmaorg.info/found/15398642_14/clancy.html )
The series of music videos they posted (Jumpsuit, Nico and the Niners, and Levitate) continue this story of escaping Dema and being free of the control of Blurryface.

The whole thing is really interesting and the hardcore fanbase has done SO MUCH analyzing and decoding of the album and it's lyrics to try and piece together this narrative because they're still super cryptic about the whole thing.

Anyway, I went on for way longer than I thought I would. I hope I at least somewhat gave you an idea of how much thought and creativity went into them making this album. I love the show, keep up the good work!!

Wow, I just listened to all of this episode.
I am thankful to say. . .I knew every music reference except some of those newer ones I never heard of. . like the rapper that isn't as good as Eminem.

Funny...I grew up where my mom made us listen to Gaither music, Twila Paris, Matthew Ward, Sandy Patti, and Phil Keaggy. My brothers were into Christian death metal and punk rock, so I was exposed to all that in the late 80s/early 90s. The hardest thing my mom would tolerate was Petra hahaha. She hated my brothers' music. Then when I started listening to it on my own. . . oh boy! Just like my brothers. She hated non-Christian music, so I so related to so much of this.

My husband and I did a similar episode together over a year ago and since we are also in our thirties, we understand.

Great episode and keep up being awesome! Also, what is this about Dashboard Confessional as a band?? I only ever heard his solo stuff before he added more than a guitar, so I am confused!!! He wasn't "one of ours" but was in Further Seems Forever with people who were Christians in the band trying to help influence him but he always said he wasn't a Christian.

Do you guys remember Earthsuit? The guy from Mutemath was in it. Ah, those old bands and stuff. You guys made me feel nostalgic.

This might be my favorite episode of this show so far. I'm only 22, so a hint young for some of the stuff mentioned, but I was really into Five Iron Frenzy in high school, so I got some of it.

On the topic of bands that kids are rallying around now, it's really different. The internet has kind of taken away the need for festivals and Warped Tour, which is sort of sad. I used to go to Lifelight festival in Sioux Falls, SD every summer. I saw House of Heroes there, and as a 16-year-old, it blew my mind.

I feel like pop and rap have sort of taken the place of metalcore and pop-punk in the current underground scene. I live near-ish to Minneapolis and the local scene there is heavily dominated by indie pop. The last couple years have seen bands like Hippo Campus, LANY, and flor gain a huge following. Even Tooth and Nail put out that LOYALS album, which is a super poppy record.

I'm not sure why this switch has happened. Maybe it's because all the "scene" kids have gotten too old for the raccoon hair and red skinny jeans and have adopted dad clothes and those clear-frame glasses. A lot of the old "scene" bands have done this, like Paramore or Hellogoodbye.

Anyway, I think that's where we'll be sitting for a few years. Trends are moving faster now. Just 5 years ago, we all had suspenders and yelled HEY along with a kick drum and banjo. It'll be interesting to see if pop-punk and emo make a big resurgence, what with a lot of SoundCloud rappers using samples from mid-00s punk music.
