What would you do if one of your videos blew up… but you eventually decided that you no longer agreed with what you said in the video? We got a really interesting email from a listener of the show asking that very question!

We also discuss how to build a great community in your comment section.

Oh my word, I didn’t realize Melanie made it! That’s amazing!

Concerning comments - I think the way each of you guys do it is good.
Kevin, I don’t think commenting on as much as possible makes you look desperate. I think it just makes you look like you care about us.

Josh - I don’t think you not commenting on as much as possible makes you look disconnected. I think the way you’ve been doing, by simply choosing a few comments to ‘Heart’, shows that you still care about us, but are more of a lurker, and that’s okay. Especially for a bigger audience.

Fewb things:

1. Great that Inner Circle member Melanie Anne Ahern got some YouTube recognition! Speaking of Inner Circle, it's high time Troy Wullbrandt be inducted into the Inner Circle. He's a long-time fan and commenter of the Inner Tube, Kevin has promoted him on his channel and given to his Patreon, and his content would probably appeal to the Inner Tube listeners. There are several creators that are worth considering for induction, but he should be in there already. He was worth inducting after the Episode 182 comment section. #CaseforKumquat

2. So you want a top-notch YouTube comment section? Tube things you must do on your channel and Tube things you must do on others' channels.
A. Make the kind of content that will attract the kind of commenters you're looking for. For example, don't "bash" non-stop and then be surprised that your commenters are critical and argumentative.
B. Foster the kind of comments you want. Respond to them, "heart" them, pin them, and possibly feature them in your videos or on other social media. You don't need to respond to everything, but respond to and promote enough of the comments you want that the audience knows that it's worth their time to dive into the comment section. If you even look at Inner Tube comment sections, you'll notice that on average they tend to be more active when Josh or Kevin has either commented in the comment section or has said in the episode a specific prompt that they'll be looking for in the comments. That's on average...externally inspired Comment Kerfuffles trump all.
C. Leave comments in comment sections that you aspire to have. Some of those people may notice you and migrate over to your channel.
D. When you leave those comments, make sure that they're ones that you would appreciate receiving: relevant, authentic, considerate. Anyone who comes to your channel due to those comments will more likely to leave comments of a similar nature.

The Bible principle regarding fostering an excellent comment section is "sowing and reaping." All of my tips are based upon that principle.

Personal opinion: I don't think Josh and Kevin are experts on this topic because they've always been content creators. They haven't been commenters. Ask someone like Masøn M. (a professional comment section edifier) what inspires him to comment. That's the kind of person you want to be attracting and rewarding.

3. If there's an old video of yours that your really can't stand, unlist it. Blimey Cow has done that on multiple occasions. Otherwise, the advice of demonstrating that you've changed is solid. I wouldn't recommend the advice of saying things to intentionally "tick off" your undesired audience. They'll get the message as you produce more content. Case in point: Chris Howard. He has a very inactive subscriber base because he changed up the style of video he produces, but he still has numbers and a history that can keep his channel afloat in the midst of transition. He didn't intentionally "tick off" his original demographic; they just figured out what he was doing and decided to not watch his new videos.

4. I'm really disappointed that Josh & Kevin haven't been giving Corban Garcia the credit he's due for the shownotes ever since returning from hiatus. Crediting Corban: There's something you could do.

I don’t even know what inspires me to comment... Does Jeff know more about me than I do myself?.. Really though, it was cause I was sick of seeing the same comments over and over again. Copy/pastes. Asking for likes and subscribers. It was just kind of annoying. I didn’t want to do that. And part of that comes with kind of wanting to create content, but being Tube insecure to stand in front of a camera, so the ability to leave comments was a magical thing. Hey, if you wanna make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and leave pointless comments... That’s what I always say...
