183: Apparently You DON’T Need to Make Consistent Content

9/5/2017

This week, I (Josh) have a really fun conversation with Inner Circle member Melanie Ahern. She runs my very favorite YouTube channel, and on this episode, we discuss her inconsistent release schedule and how she’s still been able to build an audience around her really unique content.

We also discuss whether or not you should stick to one theme on your YouTube channel when you’re starting out.
Kevin should be back next week. Thanks everyone for sticking with us for a few weeks while he has been away! And an extra special thank you to Gret Glyer, Jordan Taylor, and Melanie Ahern for helping me keep the show going in Kevin’s absence.

When it comes to missing Inner Tube episodes, Kevin is up to 16 now:
023
040
065
066
096
103
111
119
137
139
147
152
163
181
182
183

On the other hand, Josh has only missed 4 (as well as the only Inner Tube blog post). The last time Josh wasn't on an episode was Episode 070, which was 113 episodes ago. For comparison, Kevin's longest consecutive episode streak is 29 episodes in a row, Episodes 67-95.

Other fun facts: Episode 183 was the shortest episode of the Inner Tube since Episode 169, and the second shortest since Episode 152, which was entitled "How to Create Content Every Single Day for a Year". Fascinating how it only took 31 episodes for the Inner Tube to go from "ultra-consistency is the best" to "meh, do what you want if you're good at it". It took only 10 episodes after doing a whole episode about his daily photoblog for Josh to quit, and 21 episodes after that he brings on a guest that appears to validate his decision. Interestingly, both Episode 152 and Episode 183 were episodes without Kevin. Episode 183 had Josh's favorite Youtuber as guest host, and Episode 152 had Josh's favorite person in the whole wide world to fill in for Kevin.

I'm still hoping that you'll be able to get Bobby Burns on the show for Episode 185. #BringBackPossiblyBobbyBurns After all, Melanie said to give the people what they want (after spending an entire show saying "I do as I please").

Remember not to take everything Josh says literally. Josh said in this episode to "throw as much against the wall as you can" and my landlord would say "don't do that".

Let's see if this comment of mine checks all the boxes of "we need to talk about this on the show". It would be nice if in Episode 184 Josh and Kevin take the time to catch up on what's been happening in their personal lives, answer some listener questions, and respond to the top notch comment sections of Episodes 176 to 183, all within 45-75 minutes. That would probably crack my list of top 16 favorite InnerTube episodes of all time.

Don't forget inducting a couple content creators into the Inner Circle. That should happen in the next episode too. #CaseforKumquat #GabeintheCircle

Great idea, Josiah!

After reading the comments for Episode 182, the #CaseforKumquat should be at an induction point. #GabeintheCircle is well overdue, since he runs the Bargain Bin podcast. Since Josh and Kevin produce a show using a similar name for a show on SGK's Youtube channel, they ought to put #GabeintheCircle. Those two inductions would put the Inner Circle up to 14, leaving tube spots to be filled by (hopefully) the end of the year. (My bets are on Kelsey J. & Daniel Elliot [mocistone], if either or both can produce regular content for the next few months. Otherwise I think that there is still someone who Josh and Kevin have not mentioned on the Inner Tube so far that will make it in by the end of the year [since a couple of inductions have come "out of the blue" before], perhaps even someone who Josh and Kevin have yet to discover.)

Actually, if Josh can hook Daniel Elliott up with a contact person from MVMT watches, the mocistone YouTube channel might finally have its breakthrough moment. #ItsAboutTime

Hmm. I suspect that Kevin has been abducted....by ALIENS.... Or possibly ELVIS. My Magic 8 Ball is undecided on this point. ;)
