182: The Current State of Blimey Cow (A Conversation with Jordan Taylor)

8/29/2017

It's been six years to the day since we uploaded the first episode of Messy Mondays onto YouTube. Today on the show, I (Josh) have a conversation with my brother Jordan about how far the show has come, and what we think about the future of Blimey Cow.

This episode contains a lot of stuff we haven't really talked about publicly outside of our Blimey Cow Patreon community, so we hope it all makes sense. Thanks so much for listening

You have my endorsement! I read through all the Inner Tube comment sections while searching for spam comments over the past few days, and if there were tube content creators who could get into the Inner Circle based solely on the quality and quantity of Inner Tube comments, it would be you (Troy Wullbrandt) and Nathan Higley. According to my records, this is the 20th comment section that you have commented on, the first being episode 113.

Not to mention, you were the one to make this:

(If you'll recall, the video was made in response to Episode 118 of the Inner Tube and promoted in its comment section.)

Wow, really? I've commented on 20 different episodes? I had no idea.

My suggestion to cure Josh's Messy Mondays conundrum (six steps, one for each year that Messy Mondays has been a show):
1. Declare October to be "Sketchtober" (similar to something that Rhett and Link did a couple of years ago on their original channel). Spend September and early October writing and filming sketches as convenient, releasing them during the five Mondays that October 2017 has to offer. (Consider also that one of these sketches could be animated.)
2. Release a Jordan's Messyges (at least one) during the month of October to pacify the hardcore fans who don't like the stray from the traditional format.
3. Have Jordan introduce and conclude each Sketchtober episode (from either the traditional set or from the location that the sketch was filmed), enabling sponsorship promotion without requiring it to be directly integrated into the sketch itself. He can set-up the premise (reminding the viewers that this is a special Sketchtober episode) and tie in the closing sponsorship plug to the sketch's moral. [This step is optional, depending on how well sponsors could be integrated with the sketch directly. It would give the sketch more of a “Messy Mondays feel” though.]
4. Resume normal Messy Mondays episodes in November. Filming the unique sketches will help inspire topics for Messy Mondays and make the return to filming the traditional format refreshing (for both the production team and the viewing audience) as winter descends on Tennessee. Not only that, but there will be an influx of views on the video released on November 6 entitled "The Return of Messy Mondays" or "Messy Mondays is Back!" or something clickable like that. If after four weeks of sketches viewership has been declining tube much, make the final week of October a sketch with Big Head Kid ranting about how much he hates the sketches and what he would do to fix it. Otherwise, make a fifth sketch, and post Big Head kid’s rant to BHK’s channel.
5. Make sure that Kevin and/or other Inner Circle members and/or other former Messy Mondays actors (such as Amy) make cameos in the Sketchtober videos to help increase the palatability for regular Messy Mondays viewers who may or may not otherwise like the temporary change in format. Also consider including references or quotes from old Blimey Cow videos to reward the hardcore fans for sticking around. (I’m reminded of this random Blimey Cow video [https://www.youtube.com/v/8np8AN3dkSY?start=124&end=134] referencing this older random Blimey Cow video [https://www.youtube.com/v/52sZKqXnzqU?start=125&end=151]. An Inner Tube reference in one of the sketches could possibly work as well.)
6. Review the sketch videos and the viewership aftermath come December and consider whether the sketches were well-received or merely tolerated. Then share the results on the Inner Tube and advise other content creators accordingly. Who knows? Blimey Cow might be able to surpass one million subscribers by the end of 2017 with a set of well-written skits and collaborative promotion. #DreamBig

Now, Josh could go a step further and label October as "Trying New Ideas Month" or something catchier than that if he didn't want to be limited to just sketches during those 4-5 videos, but I think that this might be tube much tube soon. One month of sketches should be sufficient in letting Josh's creativity flow while not alienating the existing viewer base. Just make sure that the audience knows what is going to happen rather than springing it upon them suddenly.

As an Inner Tube listener, I would hate to have one of the hosts of this show be discouraged from creating content and trying new things after spending almost 3.5 years encouraging others on this podcast to do just that. This is my way of trying to encourage Josh that does not have to restrict his creative content production as much as he thinks he does.

The last sentence should read: "This is my way of trying to encourage Josh that he does not have to restrict his creative content production as much as he thinks he does."

As much as I LOVE Messy Mondays each week, and always look forward to it on my Sunday nights, I am always interested in new material. Now, yes, a lot of your viewers may be there for Messy Mondays strictly, but really, if you look at how well-received BBT and Messyges are... That's clearly not the case. I'll use myself as an example. I don't watch you for Messy Mondays. I don't watch you for any specific thing you put out. I watch you guys because I enjoy watching YOU (in the most uncreepy way possible)! Granted, I may be in the minority, but I think you must remember that even people who only like Messy Mondays are still watching for you, because if they didn't like you, as internet personalities, then they just wouldn't watch. I would, however, certainly be careful about diving headfirst into new formats. Some people are okay with change, but a lot of people... It just annoys and disappoints them. Easing your way into new ideas and formats would allow people time to adjust to new things and become more accepting. It's a lot like braces. The orthodontist doesn't put pieces of metal on your teeth then immediately force them into the correct position. It's a slow process, and yes, it does take a little while, but the end result is worth it, I think.

To be fair, I've never made content. I also don't know what kind of things you have planned, of course. Now, to you guys I consider myself to be a superfan. I'll watch whatever you put out. Same with Kevin. And I'll watch it as quickly as I can. It's high on my entertainment priority list. Which means that I'm always excited for new content, and I am incredibly excited for the possibility of sketches. If I were the average viewer, however, I would not want that instant change. So that's what I'm saying. But yeah, I'm looking forward to everything that's in store! Can't wait to see where the channel goes from here!

I love the majority of what you guys do, but to be completely honest, Messy Monday's is the thing that I get the least excited for. Don't get me wrong, I watch them and I'm also probably in the overwhelming minority and clinically insane, but I get so much more excited for The Inner Tube, Who Would Build The Roads, BBT, etc.
