179: How We Make Money on Patreon

8/8/2017

This week on the show, we discuss Patreon! We get a lot of questions about launching crowd-funding campaigns, so we thought it'd be fun to talk about the strategies we use to cultivate and grow out Patreon communities. Plus, our friend Jeremiah (who supports both of us on Patreon!) joins the conversation.

This was a really great episode! :D

I will write more specific comments later, but I wanted to write this encouraging message quick in case someone chooses to read the comments before deciding to listen.

Also, Masøn M., someone named "joshua schultz" specifically left you a message in the Inner Tube Community to promote his upcoming podcast (click "Last Activity" there to find it). Since not many people check the Community these days, I said that I would make sure that you saw the message.

Thank you for letting me know, oh master of the tube... Yeah, I tend not to check it a ton just because there isn't a ton of activity there, unfortunately...

This week's intro was outstanding. If I were to do my list of "Top 25 Favorite Inner Tube Episode Intros" again right now, this one would make the list.

Interestingly, this isn't the first time that the intro included a reference to "Dive" by Steven Curtis Chapman. However, I think that this intro utilized it more creatively than the one from Episode 168.

Time to submit a bunch of comments, as opposed to submitting one large comment like I have in the past. Please don't read any further down if you haven't listened to all of Inner Tube Episode 179 yet! (The comments may spoil parts of the episode for you.)

On the other hand, if you have listened already, feel free to leave a witty comment of your own, since Josh, Kevin, Corban and all of us Trube Fans do read every single one.

Wait, what does trube stand for? True inner tube fans?

Reply
Jeff Ross
8/10/2017 08:58:23 am

Correct, although it's less "stand for" and more according to the Innerside joke of adding "-b" to the ends of words. (Like how a "cruise" in Episode 115 is called a "cruisbe".) It's really a portmanteau of "true" and "tube", and it's easier to say than "true Inner Tube", which is why Josh and Kevin coined the term.

Dawn
8/11/2017 07:06:06 am

Okay, so I looked up "portmanteau" because I wanted to make sure it meant what I thought it meant. I thought it meant two words combined into one but it actually means

"a large trunk or suitcase, typically made of stiff leather and opening into two equal parts."

jk that's just the first definition.

It does actually mean "a word blending the sounds and combining the meanings of two others, for example motel (from ‘motor’ and ‘hotel’) or brunch (from ‘breakfast’ and ‘lunch’)."
And I came across this statement:

"podcast is a portmanteau, a made-up word coined from a combination of the words iPod and broadcast"

^Is this true? Did podcasts exist before? and since iPods are no longer sold, will we get a new portmanteau for podcasts?

Josiah the Carrot Stick
8/11/2017 10:31:15 pm

What? iPods are still sold.

Jeff Ross
8/13/2017 12:05:32 am

To answer Dawn's main question: No, podcasts did not exist before ipods. You see, before the iPod and .mp3 files, audio files took up a large amount of memory space digitally, internet download speeds were much slower than they are now, smart phones did not exist, and CD's were not designed with portability in mind. Also, audio was much more costly to produce back then, so those who did it usually had to generate income from it, which sometimes doesn't happen for podcasts without Patreon, which also didn't exist back then. Even when the iPod was first released, it was marketed as a music player, not an audio player, because the idea of a podcast wasn't around. No one at the time was out buying CDs with 1-5 podcast episodes to listen to over and over again. The closest things you could find were radio, which made money from advertisements, or comedy albums, which used humor instead of music to sell records, 8-tracks, cassette tapes, CDs, or donkeys to the masses.

Josh and Kevin didn't grow up listening to podcasts. Instead, they listened to the radio (see Inner Tube Episode 088 with Ace McKay for evidence) because podcasts just didn't exist at the time the Inner Tube hosts were most impressionable.

As for your idea for changing the name from "podcasts" to something else, I doubt that will happen because the term is catchy. I think those who don't know that it stands for "iPod Broadcasts" will just assume it stands for "Pocket Broadcasts" since you can listen to them from a portable listening device while it sits in your pocket. Others do claim that the term can mean "Portable On Demand (POD)casts". There were some people who tried "netcast", since the audio is downloaded from the internet, but that term just isn't as catchy. Nevertheless, if you can come up with a catchier term than "podcast", you are welcome to try to use it. But like many things in the English language, once something has a widespread name, there's a lot that has to happen in order to change it.

Perhaps Blimey Cow will do a Messy Mondays someday called something like "what life was like before podcasts" where they explain this in greater detail from their perspectives, then reveal at the end that the episode was sponsored by Anchor. :)

“Jeremiah was a bullfrog” is a catchy title (and the song’s other title “Joy to the World” is also catchy), but the lyrics aren’t exactly what I would prefer to listen to over and over again. And while back in the days of poor picture quality Colby’s Clubhouse had a parody about Jeremiah the prophet (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frbmwNdQbU0), I thought it would be fitting to have a parody based upon this episode of the Inner Tube. Therefore, I played the lyric video that Corban linked to in the show notes and I wrote the following substitute. Let me know what you think:

[Music starts]

Jeremiah was a good guest
For Josh and Kevin to have on
He claimed that he used Josh’s credit card
To support them on Patreon

Yeah, he always backed them on Patreon

Sing it: Joy to the world
All the boys and girls
Joy to the listeners of the Inner Tube
Joy to me and you

If I were the king of the world
I’d tell you what I’d do
I’d throw away the blenders and the couches from upstairs
And listen to the Inner Tube

Sing it now: Joy to the world
The whole Inner Circle,
Joy to the Inner Tube Community
Joy to you and me

[Musical Interlude]

“You know I love Blimey Cow
And Say Goodnight Kevin”
But the words that J & K love to hear you say
Are “I pledge to you on Patreon”

I said, “I pledge to you on Patreon”

Joy to the world
All the boys and girls
Joy to the Patrons both past and now
Of SGK and Blimey Cow

Joy to the world,
All the boys and girls
Joy to the world
Joy to all Patrons

Joy to all the world
All the boys and girls
Joy to those listening, even Barkley
Joy to you and me

{The actual song repeats the chorus and fades out, but I chose to add more verses:}

Jeremiah is a Patron
Of Josh and Kevin
And Phil Vischer three, because for them he felt sorry,
They’re clean, and they’re Christian

But mainly ‘cause they’re CHRIIIIIISSSTTTIIIAAANNNN!!!!! :D

[Possible Blimey Cow Interlude]

Joy to the world
All the boys and girls
Content creators especially
Joy to you and me

It seems I forgot to mention
The Inner Circle’s Ryan Matlock
He’s the fourth one that Jeremiah backs on Patreon
But that should not come as a shock

(Except that means Josh pays a lot…)

Joy to the world
All the boys and girls
Joy to those who listened all the way through
Joy to me and you

Joy to the world
All the boys and girls
Joy to everyone including you and me
Joy to donkeys
[Music plays and fades out]

I personally like Kevin’s old Patreon video, but I understand if a new one needs to be made to point the focus at fostering a community rather than simply donating to Kevin out of appreciation for what he does. Perhaps at Kevcon, Kevin can film some of his patrons saying things like “You can be a patron like me!” “Like me!” “And me!” “Like us!” “Like him! [Jeremiah points at Josh]” and then he can edit those clips into a new commercial for his Patreon. He could also film some full-fledged testimonials if he has time, but I think they should be somewhat funny and comedic, like the original Patreon commercial was, so that the potential Patrons know that the channel isn’t about being harsh, but good-naturedly critical in order to inspire better content creation.

Joke: Sometimes Kevin inspires people to create content because of what he says. Sometimes it’s his excellent content that draws creators to say “I want to be as good as he is.” Sometimes people watch Kevin’s content and think “Hey, if this guy can make it big, so can I, ‘cause I can do waaayyy better than that.” Regardless, Kevin does inspire to create. :)

That was a joke, but it kind of reminds me of Philippians 1:15-19, where the Apostle Paul talked about the importance of the Gospel being preached regardless of why people were motivated to do so.

Josh, if you’re having issues with the feeling of “I don’t know any other way than how Messy Mondays currently is”, just re-watch “Jesus-Man” or “Everybody Hates Batman: Batman Vs. Halloween” from the Blimey Cow archives. You can always go back to old, classic Blimey Cow ideas and styles, re-working them for a new audience, similar to your approach to Brother Brother Time. True, there may be more logistics with those old classics, but they would work even if Messy Mondays is suffering from a bit of a lull in terms of support. Then again, you could come up with completely new ideas as well, since Blimey Cow is more about the story of two home-schooled brothers making videos than it is about anything else. I recommend talking to God and your Patreon Facebook groups for inspiration rather than fearing the worst when it comes to content creation ideas. #Trubth

Well, they talked about this last week, but they did step outside their comfort zone a little with the "What We Learned From The Roller Coaster Incident" video by filming outside. I think it is a good step in the direction to possibly doing a different kind of show in the future. There has always gotta be a first step, even if it's something simple like that.

My Dad told me that he doesn’t care for SGK tube much because most of the episodes are very critical and Kevin doesn’t have a good movie of his own produced to support his credibility. While I may disagree with that rationale, I do think that, at some point, having a “Kevin Makes a Christian Movie” series would bring in more viewers (and it could have an overall positive impact in retaining those viewers whether the movie turned out well or not, simply because he took the time to go through the process). It could be serious, or it could be like "The Tube", where a sensible character coaches a naïve but good-hearted character through the optimal Christian movie-making process, culminating with a legitimate feature film (or short film). After the film, there could be an epilogue, where the two characters, rejoicing at their triumph, watch a YouTube video where someone like Man-E Kerr rips it to shreds, and the two characters have to handle/respond to the criticism in a Christ-like manner and consider making a sequel. I’m not sure whether Kevin would play the role of the sensible or the naïve character, as it would depend upon who the other main actor (or actress) would be (such as Josh for a sensible side kick or Big Head Kid as a naïve one). This could start a new trend with low-budget films, where they are hyped by more than a trailer, but by a whole backstory of shows. Or it could just cement this particular piece of content creation as a classic. Since so much of Josh and Kevin’s work depends on context anyway, this could be right up their alley. It could also serve to help other Christian movie makers to produce better movies, since they would then have a visual guide to follow. Then again, this would take up a lot of time to put together. That’s where Inner Circle members and Patreon supporters could help collaborate to get the overall ideas for the show together. There’s something they could do.

Kevin, at this point I watch your content on SGK just because of you. I actually really dislike some of your content, especially some of your newer movie reviews, but I watch them anyway because I support you. Perhaps I’m not doing what you want me to do if I’m blindly supporting your content regardless of the quality, since supporting Kevin’s content just because Kevin made it is as bad as supporting Christian content just because IT’S CHRIIIIIISSSTTTIIIAAANNNN, right?

Oh dear, that was not where I thought this comment would end up when I started writing it. :o I thought I was going to write something helpful, supporting, and encouraging, only for it to turn into a remark that is either exposes Kevin or pays him the greatest compliment of all, since I thought about it critically. Does Kevin actually want people to just watch his content for his content's sake instead of watching it because he made it? My head hurts a little bit now. I’m going to submit this comment anyway, in case someone is able to clear this conundrum up for me.

I definitely watch Kevin mainly for him. Sure, I love the stuff he reviews too, and while it's definitely been a transition, I don't necessarily disklike the new reviews, but I do, without a doubt, support Kevin (even if it's without money) because he's Kevin. Too be honest, I'd watch (and do watch) anything he puts out. I always smile when I see he's uploaded, not because I am excited about what he's reviewing, but because I see his channel name and icon. When I'm scrolling through my subscription feed I tend to look at the channel icons, and there are a select few I will ALWAYS click on first. Kevin being one of them. So much of the time I don't read the titles first, simply who has posted it. It helps me distinguish my watch priorities, since I am subbed to 159 people, some of which are my friends, and some of which don't upload all the time. But, there are most definitely channels I place higher in priority than other channels. And Kevin is certainly one of them...

This just felt like a REAAALLLYYY long run on sentence... Oh well...

Ah, yes, well occasionally when I try to type 'Alt-0248' on this site it will go back a page, and that's quite annoying. Or perhaps this is simply an imposter... There world may never know... I believe that Episode 171 was the first episode I ever commented on? Maybe? Idk, should maybe fact check that... But yes, if I am ever missing a crossed out 'o', you know what has happened...

Jeff Ross
8/9/2017 11:43:06 am

After a little bit of digging, the earliest comment I could find written by a "Masøn M." was on Episode 157, the earliest comment written by a "Mason M." was on Episode 147, and the earliest comment written by a "Mason McGuire" was on Episode 146 (which could be someone else, since "Mason McGuire" also left a comment on Episode 155, after "Mason M." had started posting comments, but the use of an Inner Tube reference in the Episode 146 comment suggests otherwise).

I understand about the 'Alt-0248' key difficulties; I had to try a couple of times to write this comment before just copy/pasting the "ø" character.

By the way, be careful when searching for comments in older episodes. A good number of spammers wait until an episode has been up for several weeks or months (or even years) before posting a comment that's completely unrelated to the show in the hopes that you'll click the link by their username and visit their website. I'm guessing they don't get much traffic that way, but they delay their comment being posted in the hopes that their comment won't be taken down. The absolute worst that I found was Episode 134. Somehow it being a special political episode attracted between 22 and 24 spam comments, some of which were only posted a few weeks ago, even though the episode was released 9/27/16.
Common sense warning: Don't click those links.

Masøn M.
8/9/2017 11:51:24 am

Yes, those numbers sound more accurate... It's trube that "Mason McGuire" might be me, or it may not be me, that's for you to decide. Also, I'd never noticed the comment scammers before. Thanks for letting me know. If there was one requirement I'd say there should be to comment on YouTube it would be that you have to have enough common sense not to click links... Ever...

If I ever need a hype man, Masøn M., I'm contacting you. :)

After listening to this episode, I'm wondering if "writing comments on Inner Tube Episodes" is worthy of making a Patreon for. I mean, it sounds silly to me that anyone would want to pay me for this, but other writers of niche online content make income that way. I could even use some of the money to support Josh and Kevin to help keep the site going or to give Corban a raise. I'm not sure what my Patreon rewards would be, though.

On second thought, this audience is probably tube niche right now. I should expand my audience if I wish to start a successful Patreon.

Also, Masøn M., I'm not sure if the readers can appreciate the time I put into the comments for this episode, since I composed most of these ahead of time in Microsoft Word, then copy/pasted them here. Consequently, the time stamps of my comments suggest that I was able to write them much faster than I actually could. [For example, it took me way longer than three minutes, 23 seconds to write that song parody. :D]

His name is Matt Langston. He was a good guest, as was Jeremiah. Josh and Kevin do a good job of incorporating guests into the show that they are familiar with, which helps the chemistry and dynamic.

Next week's live studio audience episode will be especially exciting, as there will be so many more guests that they could incorporate into the episode if they wish. It will be interesting to see if they choose to break Episode 87's record for most guests on one episode.

Don't worry, Masøn, there's still a day left before Blimeycon, so we should get some more traffic yet.

Fun fact: 48 is 3x16 (or, in other words, "up to 16 now" three times). I say that's a pretty good start! :D

Since this is the 50th comment, I compiled some data on number of comments posted this episode:

Jeff Ross: 19
Masøn M./Mason M.: 12
Josiah the Carrot Stick: 8
Kristen (poulet frit)/Kristen: 6
Dawn: 3
Defintiely not Josiah: 1 (and yes, that is how the name was spelled)
Tin Man: 1
Total: 50

I'm sure that more than seven people listen to the show, so we should see some more new commenters too, especially as people listen to the episode on their travel to Blimeycon, or reach Nashville and have to wait for their fellow attendees to arrive.

My other theory is that listeners are just doing their due diligence in composing exquisitely appropriate comments. They'll post as we get closer to the triple digit mark.

Then again, remember: one hundred is only the first triple digit number in the base-10 number system. We've already hit triple digits in base-4, base-5, base-6, and base-7, as well as quadruple digits in base-3 and six digits in base-2. It's all a matter of perspective. :D

One other interesting thing I found out: The previous record for legitimate comments on an Inner Tube episode was 28, set by Episode 049. (Episode 134 currently has 31 comments, but at least 22 of those are spam.) We've almost surpassed the previous record by a factor of TUBE!

A mere day... We've done good work this past couple days... I have full confidence we can reach triple digit in the base-10 number system... That said, I'm gonna be gone until tonight, so you'll have to do it without me! :D

Kristen

We can totally get to 100!!

What's our personal record? 251 I think. So 100 is no problem whatsoever.

I just reread Jeff's comment about stats, and I think we should strive for 112 comments so we can be

"up to 16 now"

SEVEN TIMES!

Jeff Ross
8/11/2017 10:06:01 am

I like that idea, Dawn! :) The new goal should be 112.

Josiah the Carrot Stick
8/11/2017 10:06:27 am

Nay, we must aim for being up to 16 now UP TO 16 TIMES!!!!!!!! Or not. That would take a while.

Awkward Potato
8/11/2017 12:53:17 pm

100? No problem. And 112 would be great!

Josiah the Carrot Stick
8/11/2017 01:27:55 pm

Indeed! Also... ... ... ... POTATOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Josiah the Carrot Stick
8/11/2017 01:28:22 pm

Bother it. I added a space.

Mas0n M.
8/11/2017 01:42:23 pm

If we ever, in the future, hit 16x16, we ought to aim for 16^16...

Josiah the Carrot Stick
8/11/2017 02:06:09 pm

Oh goodness.

Masøn M.
8/11/2017 02:45:37 pm

If the people who commented on episode 177 that have not commented here were to leave at least 3 comments, we would nearly reach our goal...

Dawn
8/11/2017 08:39:13 pm

As I said, mere child's play for FACES. As of this comment, we are at 111 comments. One more, and we shall be up to sixteen again for the seventh time.

Josiah the Carrot Stick
8/11/2017 10:29:58 pm

We can easily make it to 16x8.

Mas[crossy o]n M.
8/10/2017 09:13:20 am

Basically we just need something to rant off about, and boom. Suddenly there's 150 comments... But what could that one trigger we need be...

Still needs to be relatable to this episode or at least the inner tube/blimey cow/kevskies.

So at the 5:45-5:58 mark in this episode, the Inner Tubers accidentally activate Siri, and they all laugh at what Siri says despite the microphone not picking it up. What do you think Siri said to make them laugh?

It was probably "one odd thing I see is Church of the Nasty Bean."

Well, that was...how shall I put this... an idea. Are there any other ideas?

Josiah the Carrot Stick
8/10/2017 10:16:05 pm

Well, there's always what she actually said. :D

Mas0n M.
8/11/2017 01:27:19 pm

Perhaps she said, "One church I see in your area is church of the Nazarene", or something along those lines... But I think that Carrot was more accurate...

Mas0n M.
8/11/2017 01:34:39 pm

ACTUALLY, after further research and totally-not stalking, I have discovered that there are MANY "Church of the Nazarene"s in the Nashville angry, so Siri may have said, "Nashville First (COTN), Glencilffe (COTN), Blakemore (COTN), Bethel (COTN), Hendersonville (COTN), among many others"

But I think the most likely answer is...
"FRANKLIN CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE"

Just a little treat for the F.A.C.E.s...

We actually went to Franklin the last time I was in Tennessee, it is an awesome place...

Josiah the Carrot Stick
8/11/2017 02:05:48 pm

I KNEW IT! FRANKLIN WAS BEHIND THIS THE WHOLE TIME!

Masøn M.
8/11/2017 02:38:03 pm

Franklin would be the cherry on top of this kerfuffle...

Masøn M.
8/11/2017 02:39:00 pm

Oh my gosh, I realize I said "The Nashville angry"... I meant area... How could I make such a stupid mistake XD

Jeff Ross
8/11/2017 05:44:04 pm

Surprisingly enough, the first time I read the comment, I thought it said "area" like it was supposed to. It was only after reading the correction comment that I noticed the mistake. xD

Kristen (poulet frit)/Kristen: 11
Dawn: 5
Defintiely not Josiah: 1 (and yes, that is how the name was spelled)

But nothing on Patreon!!

Would you ever use patreon? Is it reliable? Is it safe? Why would I use patreon and not send money directly? So many questions...

Josiah the Carrot Stick
8/11/2017 05:27:49 pm

It seems pretty safe and reliable.

Dawn
8/11/2017 08:33:42 pm

I would trust Patreon...

but Patreon wants either a credit card (no) or a PayPal that wants my social security number (NO)

I don't trust anything or anyone on the internet with my social number because HOLY SNAP THAT THING'S NOT SECRET

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Erp8IAUouus

This makes me extremely paranoid.

Kristen
8/11/2017 10:11:20 pm

So you should be able to use a Debit card. And please don't trust anyone with your SSN, unless of course you let me do your taxes :)

Josiah the Carrot Stick
8/11/2017 10:28:50 pm

Why do people even want SSNs?

Kristen
8/12/2017 07:03:32 am

Depends on the company. I'm not sure about PayPal.

Dawn
8/13/2017 10:16:13 am

So you just put your debit number where it asks for the credit card number and that'll do it?

Josiah the Carrot Stick

With this comment, Comment 126, I am no longer taking stats of the comments for this episode. I hope that the positive energy flows into the Episode 180 comment section.
Here are the final results:
Josiah the Carrot stick: 35
Jeff Ross: 30
Masøn M. & aliases: 25
Dawn: 16
Kristen (poulet frit)/Kristen: 14
Corban Garcia: 3
Tin Man: 1
Awkward Potato: 1
Defintiely not Josiah: 1 (and yes, that is how the name was spelled)

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the conversations here. They are welcome to continue, but I will not be posting any more stats here. My focus shifts to Episode 180. Since it contains the most people of any Inner Tube episode, I hope that it can also receive the highest number of comments. Then again, 126 will be tough to beat. :)
