177: Kevin Got Fired (The Full Story)

7/24/2017

Last week, Kevin got fired from his job at Made In Network, an online content company here in Nashville that is most well known for managing the Cinema Sins YouTube channel. In this two hour breakdown of everything that transpired, Kevin opens up about his struggles, weaknesses, inner tudes, and ultimately TRIUMPHS! I mean who needs a job, anyway?

My Top 10 takeaways from this episode:
1. Kevin really needs to take Carmen out more. Who knows what would Kevin would have done if she weren't in his life during this time of transition?
2. Being the optimist that I am, I prefer to view Kevin's dismissal as "going out on top", since they finally appreciated his work for what it was right before his time was done. There are definitely worse ways to be dismissed from a job...
3. I think that Kevin wouldn't be sued if his former employer heard this podcast. I think, instead, that it would help those at the company to understand the situation better. It might not lead to them offering to rehire Kevin, but it would bring some closure. I think that Kevin was wise to attempt to not "burn any bridges" during this podcast episode.
4. If you're looking for an old episode of the Inner Tube to listen to that relates to this episode, look no further than Episode 012, where Kevin had just left Juice Nashville. Another good one is Episode 020, where Josh and Kevin interview Stephanie Waring, who was the owner of Juice Nashville at the time Kevin worked there. Perhaps Kevin's boss from Made In will be on the Inner Tube in Episode 185? Or Possibly Bobby? (September 19, 2017 is the projected release date for that episode.)
5. This was the longest episode of the Inner Tube at 1 hour, 57 minutes, 4 seconds. This exceeded the previous record held by Episode 093 by 2 minutes, 55 seconds. That episode was the spoiler-filled review of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. By contrast, the shortest episode of the Inner Tube is Episode 041, which is only 37 seconds long. That's even shorter than all of the "Web Extra" segments that were produced back when this show was edited.
6. That's patreon.com/saygoodnightkev (actually, that is more of a "give away" than a "takeaway").
7. Speaking of giveaways: Since it is Christmas in July this Tubesday, I posted a list of my top 25 favorite Inner Tube Intros in the Inner Tube Community, complete with durations and clickbait titles.
8. There were 8 comments last episode. It was great to see so many commenters; maybe this time we can get it up to 16 now? Be sure to leave an encouraging word for Kevin, because we learned from this episode that that's what makes Kevin feel appreciated. Josh also doesn't mind it when he receives an encouraging word, so leave one for him too. There's something you could do.
9. For success at work: Communicate, communicate, communicate. So many of Kevin's difficulties with his prior employer arose from miscommunication.
10. I guess this means that Barkley won't be in any more Community Table videos. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4MlCf-WSsI) Perhaps that video was what the dogs were discussing during the recording of this podcast...or maybe they were talking about the latest Donkey Ollie review. Correction: I meant to type that this episode was 1 hour, 57 minutes, 9 seconds long. That is the figure I used for calculating how much longer this episode was than Episode 093.

HOW-- ...do you know so much about the show? I agree with Masøn, you must be a wizard.

Also:

I haven't heard this. Sauce?

As a follow up to point number 4, Episode 20 is a really, really good episode. (I just re-listened to it now, just for fun.) Not only that, but there are four additional clips from Episode 20 that are on the website as "Web Extras". Definitely one of the more timeless episodes that the Inner Tube has produced, as it tells the story of Juice Nashville and gives some tips on project-based crowd funding along the way. Turns out that Kevin had gotten the job there because Josh had told him about the job opening. At first, Kevin accidentally had thought it was a smoothie place instead of a juice place. XD

The company's nice severance package was probably setup to avoid a civil rights complaint. Kevin also wasn't blacklisted, so they wanted to fire him, but do so in a way that wouldn't get them sued. Religious discrimination in the workplace is illegal. It does seem odd that they didn't understand that you needed to have time for marriage things.

David, I don't think you understand why Kevin was fired, and to assume that the employers handled it the way they did "just so they woudn't get sued" really misrepresents the reasons that they let him go. They didn't fire Kevin because he was a Christian or because he was married, but because of communication misunderstandings and not fitting in well with company culture due to those misunderstandings. Kevin understands "Employment-at-Will" and would not sue his former employer unless it was a ridiculously obvious open-and-shut case of discrimination, which this isn't.

Now that you mention it, The Innertube really is like Boy Meets World. But Shawn turns out all right. Kevin has, and shall, as well.

A "Kevin's Not Dead" shirt would be so offensive...DO IT I want one!

Florida beaches are great and all, but the springs and lakes are where it's at! An extra plus is they don't make you all sticky like the ocean does.

That's cool that you found this show from Kevin's SGK Facebook page, since, in the past, this show has gained listeners from Josh's personal Facebook page. :)

I thought your perspective on your job was really interesting Kevin! I think because I come from a similar world (more on the design end, but I've done some video work too), I could totally picture the type of work place you were in. The description of your office/team is a really popular "set-up" right now, where workplaces do cool team building stuff, have a trendy office (based on Made In's website, it seems like they have that?), and everyone is over-the-top excited about what they're doing. A lot of innovation labs are like that too. I worked for one as an intern last summer, but my manager was kind of like what you wanted Kevin to be. He was constantly checking in and making sure I was excited about what I was doing. If I really wasn't excited about doing something, he'd either find a way to stop it, or encourage me to just get it done because he had something else exciting in mind. I find that kind of environment really worked for me, but I could see how if you weren't excited about the work you were doing, it could be a huge drag. Surrounded by all of these people who all want to be together working on this thing that you're not really excited about sounds kind of annoying almost, haha.

Never thought about the negatives of that kind of work environment before, so thanks for sharing!! Praying the next opportunity that comes up for you is awesome, but the freelance stuff also sounds pretty cool!

Oddly enough, the places that I have worked, tended to favor employees who were married. Allowances were made for married couples to buy a house, pregnancy/baby related stuff. So, it was odd that this company was like, "oh, Kevin you should be with your wife to buy that home or make those babies."

Oddly enough, David's comment had nothing to do with Tin Man's reference to "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty", nor why Kevin was actually fired. Be sure to listen to the full Episode 177 and understand how important good communication is, both in the workplace and in the comments, lest you look silly.

Well, when someone says "secret life of x", my mind jumps to (a) secret agent, (b) mad scientist, (c) sex fiend or reality tv star. Maybe that is just me. Also, sorry. I did listen to the podcost. Thought he was fired. then again, my hearing aides are being fixed, so who knows what I heard.

Kevin, I had a very similar experience to you working as a media producer, managing an entire YouTube channel and all things around that by myself. It was probably the most difficult learning curves I had to overcome in my career. After two years of losing that job, I am still looking for income to replace it. I read once in some article floating around on the internet that people quit managers, not jobs. I guess in our case we were passively let go, but the reason for leaving was is still relatively the same. Even though finances are tight, I am a lot happier creating and working on a freelance basis everyday. I am very selfishly excited for your future cause it means more content from you will be created for my family and I to enjoy. We love watching your movie reviews (strangely Donkey Olie is our favourite) because it makes us feel like we aren't the only ones who think these christian movies are not as good as they could be. I love watching your stuff, I'd love to work with you, and I can't wait to see where this new road is going to take you!

I wish you every happiness,
Robyn B.
