Hey Kevin,

Any advice for someone considering starting an audiodrama who has very little money?

If you are looking for a cheap set up to start up an audio drama here is my recommendation:

On my first audio drama I took seriously (which is unpublished due to never finishing the first season) I used about 3 or 4 of some $25 dynamic mics. Do they sound as good as Odyssey? No, but they didn't sound like I was using a laptop mic or a dollar store one. You will want to upgrade them eventually, like I did, but they are decent for a starter show. Honestly when I listen back to them, I am not embarrassed about a quality difference, more embarrassed about my less advanced editing skills at the time. It's more important that you use what you have, or what you can afford, to the best of your ability. So this is the mic I recommend if you need a few of them https://www.long-mcquade.com/1694/Pro_Audio_Recording/Microphones/Apex_Electronics/Economy_Hand_Held_Dynamic_Microphone_w_1_4-inch_High_Impedance_Cable.htm

Please note that is a Canadian website, and if you are not Canadian may need to find a location in your own country that sells the Apex 950. If you have a little more cash to spend, I recommended the Apex 435 condenser for $75. I have put it up against more expensive mics, and honestly it often is just as good or better http://www.amazon.com/Apex-435-Wide-Diaphragm-Microphone/dp/B000I00LRO

It is a little hard to find now, and you may need to look at the Apex 435B for $90 instead.

To run these well, you will need an interface or preamp of some sort. Which is why I recommend to people to buy the Zoom H4n. Why? Because it has 2 built in mics, works as an interface for external mics, comes with a copy of Cubase LE which is a very poweful audio editing program which I have used for years. I own both Cubase and Pro Tools and still prefer Cubase for many tasks. I have never done anything in Pro Tools I couldn't do in Cubase. At least nothing that mattered to me ha ha.

There is so much I can think of, and I LOVE AUDIO DRAMA. I am the Project Manager for Kevin McCreary's audio drama podcast, "The Ceiling Fan" http://www.ceilingfanpodcast.com/, currently putting together season 5. I also produce an audio comedy http://jimmysamandtommy.weebly.com/season-1.html and am working on a Christian audio drama to come out later this year. I would love to help anyone interested in starting an audio drama, so if you have more questions I would love to pass on some of my experience in this area, email me at christophergreenmediaproducer@gmail.com

Oh yeah, if I had to tell you to buy only ONE thing to get you started on audio drama, it would be the Zoom H4n. Because then you have a mic, a preamp, interface, and audio editing software all in one package and only for between $250 to $300 depending on where you live. It may sound like a lot, but trust me, it's worth saving up for. I have never regretting buying it and have used it for so many different things. I highly recommend it.

Thanks for answering my question guys, I've tried the ISO at 100 which is the lowest my camera goes, so I'm assuming its just my lighting setup :P
